This policy applies to the Opening Bell website (openingbell.app) and the Opening Bell mobile application (collectively, the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this policy. We comply with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the CPRA, and other applicable privacy laws.

Information you provide directly

  • Email address — when joining the waitlist or creating an account
  • Name or nickname — used to personalise your experience
  • Personalisation responses — your investing experience level, learning goals, and daily time commitment, collected during onboarding
  • Account credentials — managed securely by Clerk; we never see or store your raw password

Information collected automatically when using the app

  • Device information — device type, operating system version, and app version
  • Usage data — lessons completed, quiz scores, streaks, session duration, and learning progress
  • Approximate location — country or region level only, derived from your IP address; we do not collect precise GPS location
  • Crash reports and diagnostics — to identify and fix bugs and improve app stability
  • Authentication identifiers — tokens used to manage your login session via Clerk

Information collected automatically when using the website

  • Cookies and tracking technologies — when you visit openingbell.app, we and our third-party partners (including Google Analytics and Meta) may collect information about your browser, device, pages visited, time spent, referring URLs, and interactions with the site
  • Advertising identifiers — if you interact with our ads on platforms such as Meta or Google, those platforms may share identifiers with us to measure ad performance
  • IP address — collected automatically by our web hosting infrastructure

Information collected via email signup (Beehiiv)

  • Email address — when you submit your email on our website or waitlist
  • Signup source metadata — which platform or page you signed up from, used for internal analytics only

Information we do NOT collect

  • We do not collect your precise GPS or physical location
  • We do not collect biometric data
  • We do not access your contacts, camera, or microphone
  • We do not collect your financial account details; all payment processing is handled entirely by Apple via In-App Purchases and we never see your card or banking information

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and improve the Opening Bell service
  • Personalise your learning path and content recommendations
  • Manage your account and authenticate your identity
  • Process subscription purchases through Apple In-App Purchases
  • Send you waitlist notifications, launch announcements, and product updates (with your consent)
  • Send re-engagement notifications and promotional offers (only if you have not opted out)
  • Send daily lesson reminders via push notification (only if you enable them)
  • Track your learning streaks, progress, and quiz performance within the app
  • Analyse aggregate usage patterns to improve content quality and app design
  • Measure the performance of our advertising campaigns via Google Analytics and Meta Pixel (website only)
  • Respond to your support enquiries and feedback
  • Comply with our legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service

We do not use your information to serve ads within the Opening Bell app. Opening Bell is ad-free.

5. Cookies and Tracking Technologies (Website Only)

Our website (openingbell.app) uses cookies and similar tracking technologies. These include:

  • Essential cookies — required for the website to function
  • Analytics cookies — Google Analytics, used to understand how visitors use our website
  • Advertising cookies — Meta Pixel and Google Ads tags, used to measure ad campaign performance and enable targeted advertising on those platforms

For EU, UK, and California users: We will request your consent before placing any non-essential cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time via the cookie settings link in the footer of our website.

Cookies are used on the website only and are not used within the mobile app.

6. Data Sharing and Third-Party Services

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the following third-party service providers, and only to the extent necessary for them to perform their services.

  • Firebase (Google) — database, analytics, and crash reporting
  • Clerk — identity and authentication management
  • RevenueCat — subscription and purchase management
  • Apple — In-App Purchase processing
  • Beehiiv — email list and waitlist management
  • Google Analytics — website traffic analytics (website only)
  • Meta (Facebook) — advertising measurement and targeting (website only)

All third-party providers are contractually required to handle your data securely and only for the purposes described above.

7. International Data Transfers

Opening Bell Pty Ltd is based in Australia. Our service providers — including Firebase, Clerk, RevenueCat, Beehiiv, Google, and Meta — store and process data on servers located in the United States and potentially other countries. By using the Service, you acknowledge that your data may be transferred to and processed in countries outside your own, including countries whose data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. For transfers of EU and UK personal data to the United States, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission. For transfers from Australia, we take reasonable steps to ensure overseas recipients handle your data consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

8. Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active and as necessary to provide the Service.

  • Account deletion — you can delete your account at any time using the in-app account deletion option under Profile → Settings, or by emailing [email protected]. Upon deletion, your personal data will be permanently deleted within 7 days
  • Legal retention — certain data may be retained beyond 7 days where required by law, for example Apple transaction records retained by Apple under their own policies
  • Waitlist data — email addresses collected via our waitlist are retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion
  • Crash logs and analytics — aggregate and anonymised data that cannot identify you individually may be retained indefinitely for product improvement purposes

9. Push Notifications

If you enable push notifications during onboarding or in your device settings, we may send you:

  • Daily lesson reminders at the time you select
  • Re-engagement reminders if you have not used the app recently
  • Occasional product updates or promotional offers

You can disable push notifications at any time through your iOS Settings under Notifications → Opening Bell, or within the app under Profile → Settings → Notifications. Disabling notifications does not affect your account or subscription.

10. Children's Privacy and Age Requirements

Opening Bell is intended for users aged 13 and over.

  • Under 13 (COPPA — United States) — we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a user is under 13, we will promptly delete their account and associated data. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has created an account, please contact us at [email protected]
  • Ages 13–15 (GDPR — EU and UK) — users aged 13 to 15 in the EU or UK are required to have parental or guardian consent before using the Service. By creating an account, users in this age range confirm that they have obtained such consent
  • Financial education disclaimer — Opening Bell provides financial education content only. Nothing in the app constitutes financial advice. This applies to all users regardless of age

11. Your Rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data. To exercise any of them, contact us at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.

All users — Access, Correction, Deletion, Withdraw consent

EU and UK users (GDPR) — in addition to the above: Portability, Restriction, Objection, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority (ICO at ico.org.uk for UK users)

Australian users (Privacy Act) — right to access and correct personal information under the Australian Privacy Principles, and the right to lodge a complaint with the OAIC at oaic.gov.au

12. California Privacy Rights (CCPA / CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the following rights:

  • Right to Know — request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected and the purposes for which it is used
  • Right to Delete — request deletion of your personal information, subject to certain exceptions
  • Right to Correct — request correction of inaccurate personal information
  • Right to Opt Out of Sale or Sharing — we do not sell your personal information for money. However, our use of Meta Pixel and Google Analytics on our website may constitute "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising under CPRA. You may opt out via our cookie consent settings in the website footer or the Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information link in our website footer
  • Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information — we do not use sensitive personal information beyond what is necessary to provide the Service
  • Non-discrimination — we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your personal information, including:

  • Encryption of data in transit using TLS
  • Encryption of data at rest within Firebase
  • Secure authentication managed by Clerk

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors.
